Quranic commentators differ on understanding who the foremost is. The "foremost" refers to a special group of people who will have an even better fate than the companions of the right in the afterlife.

Here, "the right" is associated with goodness, the righteous will be seated to the right of God's throne and receive their records of deeds in their right hand. The chapter also distinguishes the three classes of people in the afterlife, "the foremost", "the companions of the right" and "the companions of the left": the first two groups will enter paradise while the companions of the left will go to hell. Picking up from the preceding chapter, Ar-Rahman, which discusses the rewards of Paradise ( jannah), this chapter also mentions them and then contrasts them with the punishment of hell. (V.56:75) In Arabic Mawâqi‘i An-Nujûm: This word has many interpretations: it may mean the setting or the rising or the mansions of the stars, or the Qur’ân and its gradual revelation in stages. And verily that is indeed a great oath, if you but know. Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.ħ5. We have made it a Reminder ( of the Hell- fire in the Hereafter ), and an article of use for the travellers ( and all the others, in this world ). Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?ħ3. Then tell Me about the fire which you kindle.ħ2. If We willed, We verily could make it salt ( and undrinkable ) : why then do you not give thanks ( to Allâh ) ?ħ1. Is it you who cause it from the rain- clouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down?ħ0. ( Saying ) : « We are indeed Mughramûn ( i.e. Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful ( or left in wonderment ). Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?Ħ5. Then tell Me about the seed that you sow in the ground.Ħ4. the creation of Adam ) : why then do you not remember ( or take heed ) ?Ħ3. And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation ( i.e. To transfigure you and create you in ( forms ) that you know not.Ħ2. We have decreed death to you all, and We are not outstripped,Ħ1. make this semen into a perfect human being ), or are We the Creator?Ħ0. Then tell Me ( about ) the ( human ) semen that you emit.ĥ9. We created you: then why do you believe not?ĥ8. That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!ĥ7. « And you will drink ( that ) like thirsty camels! »ĥ6.
